About the artist
Laura Spalding Best received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting from Arizona State University in 2003 and has been actively involved in the Valley art scene ever since. She is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, has completed several public murals in downtown Phoenix, and received a 2017 Contemporary Forum Artist Grant from Phoenix Art Museum.
As a painter, her work often depicts the urban landscape with scenes that include water canals, highways, electric power lines and parking lots. She says there is an “unexpected beauty” in the ordinary things people see everyday and the infrastructure that makes living in the desert possible and pleasant. Her works on found objects like metal platters, ironing boards and spoons are also a nod to the history of the American West which includes a romantic mythology that in the past, celebrated bringing elements of “civilization” to a wild and untamed landscape.
